"You have dined, and however scrupulously the slaughterhouse is concealed in the graceful distance of miles, there is complicity." - Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Through this photograph, I attempt to communicate a gap in our consciousness. When we eat meat, we don't often acknowledge its origin and the fact that it once was an animal as cute and fluffy as any of our pets. And if we do make the connection, we tend to ignore it, as the reality of factory farming is simply appalling. A bleeding burger is perhaps a way to start bridging that gap and to bring forth a conversation about meat as the result of slaughter.
No animals were harmed in the making of this image! The meat is a blend of nuts, oats, soy sauce and a coat of coconut oil (for that greasy finish!), while the blood is simply golden syrup and red food colouring.
